Police officers should have a thorough understanding of culture and diversity and how these social elements affect the way they perform their duties.
Jerry Hoover is an anthropologist as well as a former police officer. He has worked in diverse communities in the United States as well as in international settings. This class will consider the following topics in a professional, non-biased manner:
- Definition of race
- Multiculturalism in law enforcement
- Racial profiling
- Ethnocentrism and cultural relativity
- Prejudice and discrimination
- Cultural change
- Legal issues
Many diversity training programs are insulting and biased toward police officers. They do far more harm than good. The focus of this class is on the relationship between the multicultural community and the police. This is a non-threatening approach to learning that police officers will accept.
